RWH Architect is honored to support the revitalization of Veterans Park and the Town Common in Salem, NH by providing architectural services on a pro bono basis. This community-driven public space improvement project is dedicated to honoring local veterans while enhancing accessibility, safety, and public use. Guided by Project Salem and supported by the Historic District Commission and Salem Town Council, the initiative reflects long-standing community goals to create a more inclusive, dignified, and welcoming civic environment where residents can gather, reflect, and pay tribute to those who have served.

A primary design challenge was addressing accessibility within a historically layered site. Existing pathways and memorial areas lacked ADA-compliant circulation, limiting access for visitors of varying abilities. Working closely with municipal leaders, veterans groups, and community stakeholders, RWH Architect re-envisioned the park’s circulation system to introduce ADA-accessible pathways that thoughtfully connect key features of the site while preserving its historic character and natural setting.

Another critical component of the project is the preservation and enhancement of the park’s defining historic elements, including the stone rock wall and existing memorial features. Rather than replacing these elements, RWH developed a repair and stabilization strategy that honors the park’s heritage while improving long-term durability and resilience. Material selection and detailing were carefully considered to ensure compatibility with the historic context and longevity for public use.

The project also includes the design of a new veterans monument that will serve as a central focal point within the park. Conceived as a lasting tribute, the monument provides a dedicated space for remembrance, reflection, and ceremonial gatherings. Its placement and design are integrated with the improved circulation and landscape, reinforcing the park’s role as a civic landmark and place of honor.

Through thoughtful planning, historic sensitivity, and pro bono architectural service, the Veterans Park and Town Common improvements will transform a cherished public space into a more accessible and meaningful destination. The project reflects RWH Architect’s commitment to civic engagement, community service, and architecture that strengthens public spaces while honoring Salem’s veterans.
