Set on a wooded lot in South Carolina, Atlantic Coast Pain Specialists' latest Medical Office building will span 17,000 sf over two stories. Major programming includes an MRI department; outpatient surgical rooms; a physical therapy unit; and treatment and exam rooms. With site constraints, it was a challenge to get the program to all work within the building footprint while also meeting specific federal requirements for surgical centers. In the end, the programming meets the requirements while also developing a beautiful overall building concept. The main concept of the building is to appear as though 2 boxes are intersecting each other. The main building is constructed of tan cmu blocks spanning 2 story's where it is then intersected on the 2nd floor by an angled mass made of floor-to-ceiling curtain wall making for a striking appearance. The heavy mass of the main building appears to hold the intersecting glass box that hits it at an angle. The 2nd-floor glass wing of the building cantilevers out doubling as a covered canopy for cars to drive under to drop off patients at the main lobby below.
