Since 2015, Field of Dreams, Inc., a nonprofit park and playground serving the Salem, NH community, has partnered with RWH Architect to plan and design a new performance pavilion to replace the site’s more than 30-year-old wooden stage. Recognizing the importance of the park as a community asset, RWH Architect—led by owner Rob Hannon—provided architectural design services on a pro bono basis, reinforcing the firm’s commitment to community-focused architecture and public service. Located at 48 Geremonty Drive, the Field of Dreams recreation area has long supported concerts, community events, nature walks, recreation, and family gatherings, making the pavilion replacement a meaningful investment in public life.

Early in the process, a primary design challenge was determining whether the existing structure could be adapted to support a roof, modern performance requirements, and accessibility upgrades. Structural evaluations revealed the pavilion could not safely accommodate these improvements, prompting the decision to replace it with a purpose-built structure designed for long-term use. This approach allowed RWH to address multiple deficiencies at once, including ADA compliance, performer safety, and durability, while creating a facility designed to serve the community for at least the next 50 years.

The new pavilion was designed to complement the park’s naturally wooded setting through a contemporary architectural expression that remains visually grounded in its environment. Material selections and detailing were carefully considered to minimize maintenance needs and improve resistance to vandalism—an important factor for an open, publicly accessible facility. The pavilion is fully handicap accessible, eliminating a longstanding barrier for performers and visitors alike.

A defining feature of the new design is the addition of a protective roof structure. Historically, the park’s Summer Concert Series experienced a 30–50% cancellation rate due to inclement weather, as there was no shelter for performers or equipment. The new roof significantly reduces weather-related cancellations and supports enhanced theatrical lighting and sound systems, expanding the park’s programming capabilities and revenue potential.

Completed in mid-August 2023, the Field of Dreams Performance Pavilion stands as a testament to the impact of thoughtful, pro bono architectural services. Through close collaboration with the Field of Dreams board and community partners, RWH Architect helped deliver a durable, accessible, and performance-ready facility that strengthens Salem’s public spaces and supports the cultural life of the community.
